21st Century Skills

I agree with the article that students need to be taught these core skills. The problem I see is that this looks good on paper, however, funding is a big issue. I live in a small town, and the school system is being cut left and right. It's difficult to teach these skills, provide the needed technology, and keep up with the no child left behind. It would be great if our federal and local leaders would recognize the need for these skills, and provide the needed funding in order to effectively implement them. I agree it's needed and very exciting. I hope I am up for the challenge.

  1. Hi Kelly,
I totally agree with you on the funding issues. The government is so caught up on NCLB, that they are ready to start shutting schools down and give parents a choice on were to send their kids because their school might have failed one part of the test because of ELL or SSD or even kids who get free and reduced lunch. The hole problem is that everyone involved with making decisions about education need to step back into the classroom. That also means anybody who has never stepped into a classroom!

  2. Hi Kelly,
Funding is an issue, but I would hope that if these member corporations want to develop the future work force they need to pour some dollars into schools. Especially the smaller districts that lack other government funded programs and grants.

  5. Kelly,
I'm going to try this again (technical difficulties)-
    Kelly,
This is currently a BIG issue in Michigan. As I blog, the State of Michigan is attempting to solve our budget problems. Do you know what their solution is? Cut more from education. It is unbelievable! It will become more and more difficult for our state to compete with other states. As teachers, we are constantly being asked to do more with less. I believe that it will be impossible to continue producing students with the skills needed to compete for those high paying/technology required jobs. I wish for the best, but we can only do so much without support from our leaders.

  6. We have the same problem here. There was an article saying that our governor signed off on no teacher raises. He said we CAN do more with less. I mean how much less do we have to do more with?
