The NETS-T standards I would like to strengthen are Standard 1 – Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity and Standard 5 – Engage in professional growth and leadership.
My goal is to facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity especially in the area of exploring real world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
My action plan would be to utilize Web Quests. A Web Quest is an organized format for presenting lessons that utilize web resources (Cennamo, Ertmer, & Ross, 2009, p. 55). As a teacher I can create my own Web Quest that will be relevant to the lives of the students.
In order to monitor the success of this activity, I will observe the students as they explore the Web Quest.
The evaluation would come from the students. I would discuss this activity with my students to determine the effectiveness of using this type of technology in the classroom. Another way to evaluate is to read the students’ reflections at the conclusion of the activity. As the students use the Web Quests, I will continually redesign the lessons in order to make each Web Quest more meaningful, and relevant.
The second NETS-T standards I would like to strengthen is to engage in professional growth and leadership.
My goal is to participate in my school’s technology committee in order to participate in the purchasing of the technology resources for our school.
My action plan is to attend the annual Louisiana Computer Using Educators in order to keep abreast of the current educational technology available.
In order to monitor the success of engaging in professional growth, I will transfer the information I have learned to my students.
Evaluation will occur when I observe my students to determine, if their learning needs being met, if they using digital tools effectively, and if other teachers are excited and using new technology. As more teachers and students use the technology, I will have to continue to learn in order to help others learn.

Kelly,
ReplyDeleteYour goals inspire me. I currently consider pursuing a Master's degree in Integrating Technology in Education to be my "Action" toward meeting the 5th standard. However, I think your willingness to join the technology committee will pay off greatly. I was a member of that committee at my school, and I got one of the 1st interactive white boards we were given. I also try talking to peers and watching them utilize technology during their lessons to give me professional goals. AS a middle school teacher, I have that flexibility. If you don't, you may want to suggest your technology committee host "Technology Walks" around certain classrooms for a faculty meeting to motivate the sharing of ideas.

Like you I am going to be joining my state technology organization in order to be part of a group that is on the forefront of including technology into education. I also helped to organize the tech committee at my school in order to begin having some of these conversations at a local level. One of the things I have found beneficial is to have discussions about professional development being by teachers for teachers at the school level. Like Charis said, having people sharing what they are doing is a great way to get conversations started. When you are on your committee make sure that everyone is talking about how the technologies will enhance student experiences with content. The committee at my school looked at the tools but not at the applications of those tools or what would be the best kind of tool for a specific type of learning. You already know that, but it is easy to get into a situation where it becomes about the tool and not the learning.
ReplyDeleteI like your point about making the changes to your Webquests as they are occurring. I have a tendency to wait too long and then can't remember all the minor adjustments I wanted to make. Are you thinking about having your kids do Webquests on problems that they could address?
I would like them to webquests on problems they could solve. One very relevant webquest would be about the effect of enviromental disasters, such as the BP oil spill. Living in Louisiana, this has really affected us, and many of the families.
ReplyDeleteCharis,
ReplyDeleteA technology walk is a GREAT idea, thank you for the suggestion!

Kelly,
ReplyDeleteGetting on your districts technology committee is a great way to enhance your professional growth and leadership with technology. I also chose this standard as one that I need to improve on. Even though I am getting my master's degree in technology, I still need to continue to participate and get active in what is available to me. That is great that once you got comfortable with technology, you would be willing to help others in your district.
Good Luck fulfilling your goal. You have a great start to get you going.

Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI love being on my district technology committee. You have set some great goals. I would love to find a teacher blog that offers suggestions for webquests for each grade level. Maybe that should be one of my teacher goals for technology. Have a Great Summer!
